Happy Martin Luther King Day

I looked around the web and couldn't find audio of what is in my opinion King's best, most powerful, most beautiful, and most pertinent speech, "Why I Oppose the War In Vietnam". So here it is, in MP3 and complete, enjoy. It's a discussion of America's motives for involvement in Vietnam and a little bit about our hushed history, amazing how little has changed, the speech could have been made yesterday. In 1964, the year Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize, Time Magazine called him man of the year, but they called this speech "a demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi." Sort of like what they said about Susan Sontag's beautiful critique of America in Afghanistan. Made one year to the day before he was assassinated, April 4, 1967.

Thank you very much posting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's speech on Vietnam. What can I say? The man articulates the cause with a clearer vision than anybody I've ever heard. He speaks with a morality that is most human- with a direction that is strong and righteous in it's soulful conviction- and with a fire that comes from a true source. Many thanks for offering this speech and spreading its wonderful knowledge.

The speeches on this site are just as timely today as they were in the times when they were first presented. As a African-American, as a citizen of this nation as a member of the Hip-Hop culture as a denizen of a major inner city, as a believer of God, I stand in awe of this man and his speech. His gift from God. Listening to Dr. King and Malcolm X. and Mahatma Gandhi and men like Miles Davis play the trumpet I have been fortunate to see men who were touched by God. Who communed with the heavens, who did not truly debate men on this Earth but who had converstions with God, and we were just fortunate enough to witness parts ofTtheir conversations. thank you for this site !!!

I had never heard the Vietnam speech in its entirety until a DJ at a local radio station (KBOO) played it late last night. Thank you so much for posting it here where I can share it with friends and family.

The brilliance and the vision and the pain and the humanity of this speech resonates so strongly that it seems as much a foreshadowing of the present as a reflection on his time. King calls us (or recalls us) to our higher nature so urgently and so convincingly that it seems impossible that all who heard it were not changed and made better men and women immediately.

And we forget again and again, and kill and kill again.

On the eve of the King holiday & the eve perhaps of another war, the KBOO DJ mixed the end of "Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam" right into John Lennon's "Imagine," and it might have seemed trite if it hadn't been so true.

When will we live as One?

Hey there, I wanted to let you know how great it is that you have made these available to us on MP3- so we can put it on disk. I have it on tape. I also thought you would like to know that the "Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam" is not actually complete. I just downloaded your copy and listened to it. I have a copy bought at the King Center and yours is missing about 8 minutes of the sermon. Here is part of what you are missing- "In international conflicts the truth is hard to come by, as most nations are decieved about themselves. Rationalizations and the incessent search for scapegoats are the psychological cateracs that blind us to our sins. But the day has passed for our superficial patriotism. He who lives with untruth lives in spriritual slavery. Freedom is still the bonus we recieve for knowing the truth..." It's some good stuff- maybe the editor decided to rid the sermon of the more preachy stuff- but the preachy stuff contains many tough truths. You might want to check it out if you get a chance.

Martin Luther King has done so much for America. He embodied the spirit of brotherhood and kinship that we so lack as a nation today. The sin is that someone who stood for so much good was gunned down for nothing. If he wasn't killed, he could have been president and guided this nation to a more peaceful history. I hope our current president may heed some of King's message and turn away from what could be a very bloody future for this country.

Thanks so much for the site. My family and I truly enjoyed it.

Martin Luther King's speech about vietnam is a reminder that nothing much has changed - even today, in Iraq, many of the things King said about Vietnam can be seen happening today. The world does not see America as a morally just place - We do wrongful actions under the vail of "liberation". We dont care why people in other countries hate us, we just ignorantly assume that they "hate our way of life, they hate our freedom" - but we fail to observe that our way of life, our freedom, is having a negative effect on their lives. Look at the Palestinians, they have been opressed by Israel for years, and Israels actions are illegal according to the UN. Sharon is officially a war criminal - America is the biggest terrorist country in the world - They talk about "terrorists killing innocent civilians", yet we only have to look back a while ago when America dropped two atomic bombs on civilians in japan, killing millions of innocent civilians. America is full of hypocricy - There is no true democacy or freedom of speech in America - If there was real democracy in America and real freedom of speech, the majority of people would vote No to war, and majority of people wold protest the war without fear of being arrested and battered by the police. America is not a free country, its a place where the media controls peoples minds, where there is no freedom of thought, no morality or spirituality, everything is just about materialism and money - And America causes much of the corruption and trouble and bloodshed in the world. The first Bush supported Bin Laden, America gave Iraq chemical and biological weapons - The same things that America complains about are the same things that America has created. Hypocrites, Liars!

The Reverand Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was one of the Great Americans. We need someone with his powerful, egalitarian, and spiritual character today. As America searches for its role in the world, his voice needs to be heard.
The concept of persuading the less fortunate of the rightness of the American ideals, instead of vilently enforcing our views (an act which destroys those very ideals) is best elucidated in his anti-war speech.
Thanks

Thank you for this internet site. Everything that Dr. King mentioned about the Vietnam War applies to the war that the people let our politicians put us in today. Oh if he only knew how not to be a war mongue country but a peace making country, then our young men and women would not have to study war anymore. We would truly be blessed
if we were a country that help others by constructive thinking and doing instead of making excuses why we need to go into someone else country and kill innocent men, women, boys, girls, and the elderly.
This war is not being fought for the good of the people of Irag but rather for the economic benefits for certain classes of people in the United States.

Hey Maggie, diplomacy doesn't work if the threat of war does not back it up.
Maybe you ought to go to Iraq and see how many of our soldiers are making their jobs more dangerous because they are so careful not to kill innocent people
"This war is not being fought for the good of the people of Irag but rather for the economic benefits for certain classes of people in the United States." Proove it.

Monsieur Cheppy said:

Anonymous, Israel does not oppress the palestinians, but the whole definition of "oppress" has been so distorted that most people use it incorrectly. What the UN says does not matter. They are not God, but on the contrary are anti-western and even anti-semitic.
No, the US is not a terrorist state. As for Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 1:hiroshima was a military base, 2:Nagasaki was hit by mistake (it was intende for another city) 3:we warned them, and 4:the government of Japan intended to have each man, woman and child die for Japan and the bombing scared them into submission, and therefore saved those lives. The bombs killed abou 200,000, but the entire population was 100,000,000. All those people would have died if we did not drop the bomb.
You claim that if we had a vote, Americans would say no to war. But that's not ture; Americans support the war by like 70% or something. You imply that fear keeps people from expressing their views, but police brutality is wayyyyyy overestimated. In reality, protester assault policemen with their signs (as in San Fancisco recently) far more than police assault them.
the first Bush did not support Bin Laden, and while we gave some weapons to Iraq during their war with Iran, NONE of them were chem or bio.
People in other countries hate us because we are strong and they resent that. They would hate us if we did the right thing or the wrong thing, so what they think of us should not be our guide in decisions.
People say we don't respect other cultures or other people. but that is not true. America respects civilians more than the Iraqis, and more than almost any other nation on earth.
One last thing: the media does not control me or anyone else I know personally. It's good to be suspicious and skeptical, but we shouldn't be paranoid.

Friend, you should read "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" by Greg Palast. You should read "Manufacturing Consent" by Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman. Or any Chomsky.

You say that you are not controlled by the media, and it is true. But you have been misled. Our country gave Saddam Hussein anthrax.

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/nightline/DailyNews/us_iraq_history_1_020917.html

The language that you use about the world's first nuclear holocaust is so construed and shaded that it is truly dangerous. Please come back to this wry bread site as I have, and read my response. Please! then go:

http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/abomb/mp10.htm

Sixty-six thousand people died in Hiroshima by that sites tally. More than that injured. The total casualties were more than the population of 255,000 before the strike. Monsieur Cheppy, let's not be paranoid - let's check our sources.

And check our language.

In reference to the total casualties for the only hostile deployment of nuclear weapons, I am not concerned with the totals that you used, but more with the way you brush off the numbers of dead. You said, "All those people would have died if we did not drop the bomb."

Let's savour that for a minute.

Did you actually listen to the speech that is posted on this page? Did you? The danger of your language is that most media speaks in shaded vague ways, too. Media is big business.

http://www.mediatransparency.org

Check your sources, cheppy. Whose paying for your infotainment? commercials are paying. What are they buying?
the commercials are buying you from the tv stations.

http://www.gregpalast.com

I saw this journalist speak the other day. He digs deep, produces true evidence. He said that you don't need conspiracy theories, the facts are all right there.

I I hope you come back tto read this. Really I do.

He has a right to be that way, but if you read anything by him, that's what you'll get.

*Sigh*, no, we did not give anthrax to Hussein. That's a very common distortion these days, but our common cause with Hussein against Iran never went to the extent of giving them weapons of mass destruction. You claim that the media misleads people, and that is true to an extent, but I can't help noticing the site you referenced is part of ABC news. Even so, that site only says that eased restrictions allowed Iraq to import things, and while it is possible that one of those things was anthrax, it is not sure. That's not the same as giving them weapons. By the way, one question: Even if we did give Iraq those things, is that any reason why we shouldn't take them away, since he's so dangerous?
By the way, I think you use the word "construed" incorrectly. You're probably thinking of "contorted". In any case, it's not dangerous. Speech is almost never dangerous unless it's advocating the overthrow of a gov't or the oppression of a people

Hey Hobby
Don't worry, I'm open-minded enough that I can read an opposing viewpoint all the way through. I'm not going to flame you either.
I guess some of the misunderstanding is from the way I put it. When I said "The entire population was 100,000,000" you probably thought I meant Hiroshima, but what I really meant was the entire population of all of Japan. The only alternative to the bomb was an invasion, and like I said, the Japanese gov't was planning what they called an "honorable death for 100,000,000", which mean that if they were invaded, they would have every single citizen die for Japan. I didn't want all those people to die, nor all of the people on our side as well who would die. It's sad that the bomb had to be dropped, but the forced surrender saved the lives of all the people who would have died either voluntarily or involuntarily in an invasion. After the surrender, several members of the cabinet actually committed public suicide in the parliament courtyard, a testimony to the fact that they would never have surrendered any other way.
Hey man, I'm not simply brushing off numbers of dead people. In wartime, we always have to take everything into account, and that is precisely what we do when we take a long hard look at what would have happened if we did not drop the bomb. Killing 200,000 to 255,000 is tragic, but it's simple arithmetic when we factor in the thousands of our own troops and 100,000,000 civilians who didn't die, thanks to the actions Truman took.
I always tell my friends that the only part of the bombing I would change would be that I would have dropped it on, say, a military island, but on the other hand, that might not have gotten the surrender as surely as the other way.
By the way, for what it matters, I did listen to that speech, which is how I found this site in the first place.
I know the media speaks in vague language, because i can hear it in their war coverage. But the media and I rarely agree, and so I'm always forced to go around and look for all sorts of sources. Whenever I read a website, my first criterion for if they're reliable is not "do they agree with my viewpoint", but "who wrote it? What sources do they mention? and What are their connections to other groups?" I listen to two conservative talk shows, two liberal/conservative talk shows, and one liberatarian. I read liberal newspapers and conservative magazines. I read liberal and conservative opinions all the time on the net.
As for Hiroshima itself, my main source is Modern Times by Paul Johnson who is more or less the best historian of the Twentieth century there is. That book won a favorable review on Amazon.
Whatever you mean by infotainment, I always make it a point to be skeptical of whetever the media says. Whatever is trustworthy and not, I never get my info from one source, if that's what you were asking.
As I always say, never trust an unnamed source.
I guess we should stop this, because this place was not meant to be a debate forum. I'd give you my e-mail, except that im doing so, I would be giving it to everybody on the site, and I'd get a lot of hate-mail.
Anyway, take care and thanks for the convo!

P.S. It's cool, isn't it, when people can debate without blowing up at each other and calling names.

Hi,

Thanks for the site. These quotes are quite timely also:

- Oklahoma bomber Timothy McVeigh during his service in the first Gulf War

" We had to destroy the village in order to save it "
- American military press officer, Vietnam

Some more interesting lessons from history...

" Saddam Hussein, armed with a pistol on his hip, seemed 'vigorous and confident' ... Rumsfeld 'conveyed the President's greetings and expressed his pleasure at being in Baghdad' "
- Newsweek on declassified documents from 1983

" the US, under the successive administrations of Ronald Reagan and George Bush Snr, sold materials including anthrax, VX nerve gas, West Nile fever germs and botulism to Iraq right up until March 1992, as well as germs similar to tuberculosis and pneumonia. Other bacteria sold included brucella melitensis, which damages major organs, and clostridium perfringens, which causes gas gangrene. .... The shipments to Iraq went on even after Saddam Hussein ordered the gassing of the Kurdish town of Halabja, in which at least 5000 men, women and children died. The atrocity, which shocked the world, took place in March 1988, but a month later the components and materials of weapons of mass destruction were continuing to arrive in Baghdad from the US. "
- US Senate Report
http://www.sundayherald.com/27572

" Mr Channon, in line with Mrs Thatcher's policy of propping up the dictator, said: 'A ban would do our other trade prospects in Iraq no good'. The British taxpayer was even forced to write a compensation cheque for £300,000 to the German-owned company after final checks on the plant, completed in May 1990, were interrupted by the outbreak of the Gulf war. The Falluja 2 chlorine plant, 50 miles outside Baghdad, near the Habbaniya airbase, has been pinpointed by the US as an example of a factory rebuilt by Saddam to regain his chemical warfare capability. Last month it featured in Colin Powell's dossier of reasons why the world should go to war against Iraq "
- UK Guardian 6th March '03

" Ministers deliberately misled Parliament, but did not intend to mislead Parliament."
- British Arms to Iraq Inquiry, June 1996

" All of us have heard this term ‘preventive war’ since the earliest days of Hitler. I recall that is about the first time I heard it. In this day and time…I don’t believe there is such a thing; and frankly, I wouldn’t even listen to anyone seriously that came in and talked about such a thing. "
- US President Eisenhower, 1953

" in the United States only Congress can declare wars."..."Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country. "
- Nazi Hermann Goering during the WWII Nuremberg trials.

Dr. King is the most courageous individual in history. It takes a strong person to be able to stand up to a tough racist society. He used a non-violent approach which was the success of his movement. His biggest theory was that "Hatred can't drive out Hatred". His biggest defense was "LOVE". He is a strong warrior. I'm honored and grateful for his efforts and the efforts of his followers. It is important to keep his dream and struggle alive. Thanks for offering this page.

While listening to Dr. King's speech, I read many of the comments on this site. The two words offered by "ARIEL CLINE" epitomize how many people in the twenty first century continue to stifle the aspiration for equality for all in the United States of America. Thus I am saddened to say "The Dream" has not become a reality as of yet. I am sorry that the significance of MLK’s words continue to be overlooked and people such as yourself,” ARIEL CLINE" still languish in ignorance!
